Arts and Sciences Competition

Announcing the A&S Competitions for the Ragnarok Rampage 2024: A Nod to the Norns!

Honor to the Norns though the Arts and Sciences Compete in all three competitions to enter to become the Carraig Can Champion of Arts & Sciences! Foreigners welcome to become champion (it’s tradition!).

The Norns are Urd (also spelled Urdr, or Wyrd, meaning “Past”), Verdande (“Present”), and Skuld (“Future”). They spun out the fates of people and gods and maintained the health of the World Tree called Yggdrasil.

Competition the First To honor Urd:

Present a project of artful skill completed in the past, at least 1 year ago. Impress the Norns with your skill with string, showcase your preserved or aged food, or bring out a research project that you composed in ages past. Entries for this competition should have some documentation (Try E-Z Doc!). This competition will be judged by a panel of artisans.

Competition the Second To honor Verdande:

Present a current project you are working on that is not yet but will be finished soon after Ragnarok (and we’ll hold you to that!). This project should in some way benefit your fellows by being a gift for a SCAdian, being largesse for kingdom or barony, or similar. Consider scroll blanks, seedlings growing for a garden that will yield feast food, or half of a woven piece to be gifted. The project should be approximately halfway done: not 10%, not 90%. HALF. You must have been working on it within the last 6 months. Documentation appreciated, but not required. This competition will be judged by populace bean count.

Competition the Third To honor Skuld:

Present a plan or depiction of a project that you would like to do in the future or aspire to achieve, no matter how wildly unlikely it might be. Project descriptions should include three paragraphs or sections: Description of the project, Design of the project (including materials and tools needed), and a Design process. Note that humor is encouraged! Think big, think impossible; fantasy/mythology would not be out of place. Documentation appreciated, but not required. This competition will be judged on how amused your Barons are.

Becoming A&S Champion

Their Excellencies Carraig Ban will choose their next Arts & Sciences Champion from all entrants who participate in all three competitions. You do not need to win all or any of the challenges, but you must make a valid entry into all three.

Dame Nicholaa Halden (Nora London), Barony of Carraig Ban Arts Champion, offers a suitable prize for her favorite entry. For questions on the A&S display please contact her at nhalden0001@gmail.com
